An important military camp in Cesare Augusto age Torino’s fortune is linked to the Savoy family since 1563 when Manuele Filiberto chose it as first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

In 1861 Italy’s first Parliament gathers in Torino: the heroes of Italy unification like Giuseppe Garibaldi, Giuseppe Mazzini Alessandro Manzoni and Giuseppe Verdi took a seat in it.

This illustrious past comes back to life again in the Roman monuments in the many examples of baroque architecture like Madama Palace, the Royal Palace and the Carignano Palace, in the Royal Savoy Residences declared heritage of Humanity by Unesco and in the many prestigious museums.

There are forty collections each worth a visit: the Egyptian Museum with its 6500 Egyptian art and culture finds a collection second only to the Cairo Museum. The Automobile Museum, the Royal Armory Museum housing medieval examples and heirlooms belonging to Napoleon. The Sindone Museum and the charming National Cinema Museum housed at the Mole Antoneliana, Torino’ s landmark.

Cradle of the Italian cinema, of the radio and of some big companies such as those of the automotive industry, Torino saw the dawn of some significant artistic and cultural movements.

For art and painting lovers the city offers a rich program: works of tremendous historic value are displayed in the Sabauda Gallery, in the Accademia Albertina and Giovanni and Marella Agnelli art gallery and exhibitions whereas Bricherasio Palace, the GAM (Modern Art Gallery) and the Rivoli Castle house large exhibitions and permanent collections of major modern artists.
